Does Silverfish make those too? have you tried Oakley, Kurtis USA or Barz?

Silver fish makes similar shades…I tried asking them for a sample but they declined. Luckily SeaSpecs obliged.

I haven’t tried Oakley…they make great optics…I have Oakley sunglasses (Gascans and M-Frames)…if you want the ultimate in quality you can’t go wrong with Oakleys. On the other hand, I wouldn’t invest $250 for Waterjackets because they’ll get trashed in the surf. I think the SeaSpecs serve their purpose.

Haven’t heard of Kurist or Barz though.

How secure are they? Will they stay on after a hard wipeout? Do they keep water out at all (like goggles)? Can you get them in prescription?

I went to the optometrist today and heard some things about my eyes I didn’t want to hear. I might have to get something like this to keep surfing…bummer.

They’re pretty secure if you tighten the strap…obviously nothing is completely foolproof e.g. eating it on an overhead North Shore swell may rip them off your face but for mellow waves it’s all good. My friend has them in prescription…you should contact them about that.

I owned a pair of these a few years ago but they would fog up constantly. Overall wasn’t a big fan. Did you have any issues with them fogging up on you?

These sounded like a great deal for the late-afternoon sun, but as someone else said, fogging spoils it. I tried every anti-fog I could, and nothing works, at least in our central CA cold water. Spit on the inside works better than anything, but it’s a hassle to get them off, get the spit in, then get them back on…and it doesn’t last long. They’re decently made glasses, just don’t work for surfing unless you don’t care if you can see.

@Gary R. yes, I’d have to agree with you. They’re decent glasses for the price but they do fog up (stand up paddlers would probably find that they work just fine). I’d say if you want the best quality you should get Oakley Water Jackets. You end up paying a premium but I’ve never been dissatisfied with Oakleys…ever.

My wife bought me a pair of Oakley’s version about 7-8 years ago. On a windy day or a day with a bad glare it’s pretty sweet having them.
To answer some of the previous questions above, no they are not like goggles they don’t keep water out, they are like sunglasses.
Yes you can lose them. If it’s big you should tighten the strap as tight as you can. Issue is the closer they are to your eye (tighter you strap them) the more fogged up they get from the heat your eye puts off. They do float though, I’ve lost them a few times and fortunately recovered them…the ones I have are a few hundred bucks.
The fogging up is still an issue, can’t seem to find anything that helps really. If you splash your face wetting the lenses before paddling for a wave that clears it up for a minute so you can do your deal. Sometimes the fogging is worse than other times, water temp and air temp have a lot to do with it. Sometimes if it’s bad I use them just between sets, when a wave comes drop them around the neck, catch your wave and throw them back on before the paddle back out. I’ve tried different cleaners, spitting on the lenses, nothing has really worked thus far that I can recommend.
Would prefer not to wear them but unfortunately I have to…blonde hair/blue eyes and the sun don’t mix for long…I developed a form of skin cancer in the white part of my right eye due to the suns glare over the years. After having the issue removed twice was told by the eye Dr to either give up surfing or protect my eyes so had to go with these glasses. No issues since fortunately.
I’ve been approached in the water numerous times by people asking about them and had a few tell me they’ve had similar issues…guess it’s pretty common as you can’t really put sun block in your eyes. Bottom line these will protect you. I’ve used them for other purposes outside of surfing too…white water rafting, fishing, jet-skiing, etc. They work great for all that.
