Filed in: Shaper Reviews (CA) | On: March 28th, 2007 | Comments: (21) Con Surfboards was founded by Con Colburn in 1958. His first surf shop, originally called the Surf House, was located in Santa Monica, California. A year later, two other retail shops were opened and Con changed the name of his surf shops to Con Surfboards. Con Surfboards’ two most popular models were the ‘Ugly Surfboard’ and the ‘C.C. Rider Surfboard’. The Ugly model was created during the noseriding craze of the 60’s and showcased a ridiculously blunt nose perfect for long noserides. The C.C. Rider, designed by Claude Codgen helped Con Surfboards enter the growing East Coast surfing market and featured classic rocker and superb noseriding. The company offers a variety of longboard designs from the original ‘Ugly Surfboard’, modern performance noserider, to the classic pin. 21 Comments »By participating in online discussions you acknowledge that you have read and agreed to the TERMS OF SERVICE. Also had the butterfly on the deck with a wing span of about 10″ of so. Any info on it? Todd Duncan, on May 8, 2009 @ 5:51 am |I had a 7′ Con Crystal Butterfly board that I bought from Pete Smith’s Surf Shop in the late 1960’s in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It was 23″ wide with a kick in the nose and a diamond tail. It was my favorite board and I still miss it. Would love to find some pictures of the butterfly if you know anyone who has some. Thanks. Todd Duncan Pete Cowper, on May 21, 2009 @ 5:13 pm |I still have my 9’7″ Con with 775 written in the single redwood stringer. Surfed Cayucos area in mid-1960s. Robert Daniels (Bob Passman), on June 6, 2009 @ 7:57 am |Back in ’66–’67 I owned a Con two piece board that fit nicely into my VW Bug. I think Con was the first to make these, but I have not seen one since. I’ll never forget the day at Latigo when Roy Seaman, rode the front half into the shorebreak when the pin securing the front to the back fell out. I ordered the latest owner to cease and desist in 2009 and if anyone gets confused and hears of one being built by Con Surfboards since 2009, please let me know. Con Fly, on June 18, 2010 @ 5:10 am |I have a Con Fly made about 30 years ago. Excellent condition. Short and fat, six feet and steady as she goes. Great flotation, excellent turning ability, with enough stability to get a cheater five. Perfect board for me when I was 120 bounds dripping saltwater. Brad, on July 26, 2010 @ 11:15 am |I Have a near perfect condition CC rider from the late 60’s. Its 8’6 has 2 box’s for a wave set fin one infront of the other. It has a yellow and blue/greenish rail resin drip on it. I was just wondering what something like this is worth? Mark, on April 25, 2011 @ 6:09 am |Really fun reading this….spent many days drooling in the Con shop during the 60’s and early 70’s before being forced (13 years old)to move to the East Coast!!! If I remember correctly it was on Pico! Thanks for creating this and keep using that lemon smelling Control Wax! 25 cents? Bob Purvey, on May 4, 2011 @ 11:16 am |Neal: Just now picked up on this string…so sorry for the year long delay with my reply to your question: “Bob, are you the original designer of the Ugly?” I have stated that I designed the surfboard from the beginning in 1966, then in the trial when I sued Con for breached our contract and withholding my royalties, and then most recently on Swaylock’s Design Forum when “Magic Man” who I am told is Steve Brom (one of The Ugly shapers for Con) stated he was told by Gary Seaman (the original shaper) that he designed the board, which I replied to in detail. I had been designing noseriders for two years before I came up with The Ugly composition. I was mentored by Dewey Weber and Iggy. I had a noserider model with Ernie Tanaka before I joined the Con Team. The only difference with my Tanaka model and The Ugly was the wide nose, which was what Gary shaped to my specifications. The current owner of Con surfboards has withheld royalties since 2008 and rather than sue, I decided to join forces with 12th Floor Foam & Glass in Garden Grove, California, to build the Ugly and Super Ugly boards and they have impeccable attention to detail and can maintian the authenticity, not only to the original shape from 1966 but also to advances being made to the Hybrid and Super Ugly. Check’em out at http://www.theuglysurfboard.com and look for The Ugly Challenge coming to Malibu Surfrider in October 2012. Jack Gabus, on September 15, 2011 @ 5:48 am |Bob having lived in Ocean Park for 20 years right down from the Pico Ave store. This week I cruised by the Condon street shop and noticed it was defunct. Question is who owns the Con trademark now. or is it in limbo. Brandi w, on September 17, 2011 @ 12:34 pm |I have a 70s con board with butterfly its about 7’5 and red it was passed down in the family to me I have been offered $1500 but I did not want to get rid of it but now I have a little one and although it would be nice to pass it down to him times are tough and my best option is to sell.
