This famous north shore spot, named after surfing/shaping
legend Dale Velzy is just past Sunset Beach directly in
front of the new gated housing development. V-land is
an extremely localized breaks consisting of heavy north
shore locals and hot dogging groms. The wave itself is
similar to Sunset Beach focused in a big bay emptying
into a big channel. Velzyland can sometimes be fickle
but on its good day it throws a wide open barrel along
the ultra shallow reef. Other times the barrels are few
but the open faces and fast walls provide a variety of
sections for the north shore’s up and coming surfers
to bash lips and practice radical maneuvers. For detailed
surf spot information check out our Hawaii
surf maps.
Bottom: Reef, reef, reef.
Ability level: Intermediate to Advanced.
Access: Park along the street in front
of the gated housing development.
What board to bring: Bring your hot
dogging shortboard. You’ll occasionally see longboards
on really small days but unless you rip, you’ll
probably get nothing but ‘stink eye’ from
the locals.
Places to stay: Turtle Bay or other
North Shore vacation rentals.
Places to eat: Ted’s Bakery has
an awesome selection of plate lunches, sandwiches, and
delicious pastries and is the perfect after surf eatery.
You can also dine at Turtle Bay though pricey and for
a larger selection of choices head into Haleiwa town.
Other things to do besides surfing:
If you’re visiting from the mainland you definitely
need to experience one of Hawaii’s top things to
do…a luau.
The Polynesian Cultural Center luau in Laie (just a few
minutes north from V-land) offers one of the best Hawaii
luaus.
